It takes discipline

It takes discipline

It is a beautiful day in Stockton, CA. That means that today will be an exercise in discipline. Plenty of discipline. I work at home.

Most people think working at home is easy. Get up and make yourself some coffee, have a leisurely breakfast, take the dog out for a walk on a beautiful morning, come home and enjoy a day of uninterrupted work. There are times when it goes like that, and the reason is discipline.

It takes a lot of discipline to be your own boss.

So what’s the key? You just have to do it. It takes discipline.

Here are some things which may help toward discipline needed to reach success.

  • Have a plan.
  • Set daily goals and accomplish them.
  • Stick to a schedule.
  • Make appointments with yourself and others.
  • Limit or eliminate distractions. (Unfortunately, nothing can be done about some distractions, for instance, a beautiful day.)
  • Set time limits on activities. (Like going outside and enjoying a beautiful day.)
  • Prioritize.

One of the best things I have found to help keep me focused on my work is know why I am doing it. If you don’t know why you are doing something, then you need to ask yourself, “should I be doing it.”

Mostly, it comes down to discipline. Just doing what you know you need to do.

Success isn’t easy. Sometimes it means making sacrifices, both large and small. Sometimes it means staying indoors on a beautiful spring-like day and getting to work.

One thing I know for certain. It is better than that cube that used to constrain me.
