104 | Mrs. J. L. Walker Will Remain In Memories In the publication "Georgia's Bi-Centennial Memoirs and Memories," the author, Lucian Lamar Knight tells of Mrs. J. L. Walker as "one who is destined to live long in the history of Ware County." Mrs. Walker, author of the book, "History of Ware County, Georgia," published in 1934, will, "have her name fragrantly recalled when many a financier and many a politician is forgotten," writes Knight. Knight wrote, "We re-echo approval the words of Mr. John Greer in his fascinating forword, "It is fortunate for Ware County that she has among her own citizens one so well qualified to do the work which other counties of the state are doing viz: preserving the states traditions'. Georgia probably started too late to preserve the elements that go to make up a full report, but Ware County at least can rest in the assurance that her's is first among the first in quality and compoeteness." Mrs. Walker says in her introduction: "Our work has been a labor of love. We therefore affectionately dedicate this work to the founders of Waycross, Dr. Daniel Lott, Dr. Benjamin Williams, Mr. William S. Bailey, and Captain Cuyler W. Hillard, who unselfishly created this city and whose memories must be preserved as long as this municipality shall live." Mrs. Walker, before her marriage was Laura Singleton of Milledgeville, later Eatonton, daughter of Samuel Singleton and Ann Christian Singleton. On her parternal side she traces her lineage from Colonel Matthew Singleton, of Sumter County, South Carolina, one of the leading spirits in the early history of that state. On the maternal side she is descended from Israel Christian, who colonized Botetourt County, Virginia, served in the Virginia House of Burgess from 1761 to 1764 and was a captain in the Continental Army. His name was given to Christian Colony, Virginia. December 19, 1883, Laura Singleton was married to Dr. John Lott Walker, at that time first beginning to practice his profession in Wrightsville. They later moved to Waycross where they played a leading and influential part in the life of this south Georgia city. Dr. Walker was born in Washington County and was the son of Elisha Walker and Martha Webb Walker. He engaged in the active practice of medicine for 47 years, 39 of which were spent in Waycross. As a banker and a capitalist, Walker attained wide spread recoginition. For more than a quarter of a century he served as a director of the First National Bank in Waycross. At the time of his death he held the office of the chairman of the board. His other accomplishments included: Trustee for the Eleventh District Agricultural and Mechanical School, and trustee for the School for the Deaf and Dumb at Caves Springs. He served three times as president of the Waycross Board of Education on which he served for 25 years. Dr. Walker served in the government of Waycross as an alderman, commissioner and mayor. He was the first president of the Chamber of Commerce and at one time served as president of the Ware County Bond Commission. He was a mason and a Shriner, a member of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and the Benevolent Protector of the Elks. He was a trustee of the First Methodist Church and served in many church offices over the years. Dr. Walker died May 14, 1929. Dr. and Mrs. Walker had four children. They were: John Singleton Walker, an attorney; Robert Carroll Walker, a physician; Annie Laurie Walker (Mrs. C. A. Whitmer); and Samuel E. Walker, a real estate agent. All of the Walker children are now deceased. Mrs. Walker's work in Waycross made history. In 1924 she planned a ceremony on the banks of the Suwannee River, marking the centennial of General Floyd's victorious march through the Okefenokee Swamp. In 1934, a pageant with 800 characters marking the 100th anniversary of Ware County and depicting the historical significance of Waycross was written and produced by her. She erected markers and monuments at old trails and historic sites that the history and the romance of this section might not be forgotten. The Laura S. Walker State Park was named for her and she was the only woman to have a park named for her while she was living. Agricultural development in Ware County advanced because of her interest. She was responsible for Ware's securing a home demonstration agent and a 4-H Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Waycross Woman's Clubs, and many other groups. The wife of a physician, she instituted movement for a hospital and better medical facilities. Mrs. Walker, known to those of her day as "Waycross' First Lady," died on Saturday, April 9, 1955, at the age of 94. 105 | My bigger than life, loving, awe inspiring, gentle giant of a father passed away very peacefully at 6:50 this morning. I never have known him to tarry once he started something. I will say that three days from diagnosis to leaving us has been a bit overwhelming. I told a girlfriend this morning on the phone, I think I've been through longer tornados. But like I told him..."You've given me everything thing I need Daddy, go in peace." -- Leigh Poythress Wilson | Poythress, John Maynard (I0053)

140 | Obituary Lornelle went to be with Jesus on Monday, January 17, 2022 following a lengthy illness. Born May 20, 1943 in Washington, D.C to the late Sidney and Marguerite Bayne. Lornelle grew up in the DC area with her older brother and two younger sisters. After graduating from Wilson HS, Lornelle met Elmer at their place of employment and they were married in 1963. They raised their two children in Rockville and life was full of scouting duties, municipal pool visits, and of course the never-ending home chores. She was an exceptional homemaker, gardener, and general contractor extraordinair for the fixer-upper they bought in 1974. Together Elmer and Lornelle poured their love and talents into 333 Seth Place and transformed the old house into a treasured home. Lornelle loved antiques, collectibles, knitting and quilting, winning many ribbons at the Montgomery Co. Fair. She gave back to her community by donating her hand-made blankets to Project Linus. She was a self-taught pianist and enjoyed playing for her church. She also served her church as treasurer and loved cooking for the potluck luncheons and singing in the choir. Her zest for life at home and church also found its way into the Finance Office at Montgomery College where she had a long career assisting and supporting both colleagues and students. All who knew her, loved her as was evident at her retirement celebration from the college in 2011. Having had summers off during her tenure, she and Elmer were able to travel to exciting destinations near and far, by plane, train, cruise and car. Together they saw the best of all 50 United States AND the best of many other countries too. The collection of Creation photos of the beauty and grandeur they witnessed together is endless! Gatherings with family including 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren made her the happiest. Whether it was a school milestone or sporting activity, she would always show up with her camera ready to capture life's sweet moments. She always displayed the most gentle spirit in her many roles as wife, mother, sister, grandma, great grandma and Daughter of the King. As her end drew near, Elmer's joy in caring for her was complete because of the gentleness of her spirit. The truth is, we are all richer from the gift of walking life's highs and lows with her. Missing her here on earth is indeed comforted by our knowledge that Lornelle has finally gained Heaven. Beloved wife of 58 years to Elmer Blankenship; devoted mother of Lauren Haas (husband, Tim) and Wade Blankenship; cherished grandmother of Andrew, Tony, Travis, Ginger, Allie, Matthew, and Kevin; great grandmother of Brianna, Bailey, Easton, Cameron, Luke, Mila, River, and Charlie; loving sister of Tony, Sydney, Dee Dee, and the late Betty. Family will receive friends at PUMPHREY'S COLONIAL FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Montgomery Ave, Rockville, MD on Tuesday, January 25 from 4 to 6 pm, where service will be held on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 10 am. Interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to MontgomeryHospice.org, or DementiaSociety.org | Bayne, Priscilla Lornelle (I1238)

141 | Obituary FLOYD EDWARD BENTLEY: Dr. F. Edward Bentley left this earth October 25, 2023, to be with his Father in Heaven. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia "Ginny" Thomason Bentley who passed away July 2, 2013. Edward was blessed with a fruitful life filled with many achievements, a loving family, and a lifetime of giving back to the communities he lived in. Edward was born November 16, 1932, to parents Floyd Thomas Bentley and Edith Bayne Bentley in Richmond, Virginia as the country was coming out of the Great Depression. Second oldest of four siblings, he had an academic science quest that made him excel in high school science. He graduated valedictorian of his high school in Culpepper, Virginia and went on to Randolph Macon University in Ashland, Virginia, earning a B.S. in Organic Chemistry in 1953. He was Valedictorian of that graduating class as well. He married his sweetheart, Ginny from the nearby women's college at Mary Washington University. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio and rented an attic apartment while Edward earned his Master's degree in Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University. The next stop was Gainesville, Florida to finish up with a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Florida in 1956. While Edward was in Gainesville, Ginny was giving birth to their son, Russell Edward Bentley, in nearby Jacksonville where she grew up. After graduating in 1956 with his PhD, he began a brief stint with DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware before moving his young family, including infant Gail Whitfield Bentley to Austin, Texas. He started his career as a research chemist with Jefferson Chemical Company's research laboratories in Austin in 1958. Boiling beakers and research were his passions. He earned several important patents, including for research he did on the emerging permanent press industry. Edward and Ginny enjoyed raising their two children in Austin during the 1960's through the late 1970's. His involvement with the Boy Scouts, and Troop 59 in Austin, was full of adventure for him including the joy of being known as Scoutmaster "Dr. B". He enjoyed his time scouting for over 10 years, including his excursions of hiking and canoeing with the scouts which were numerous. He camped out in the Grand Canyon, Philmont, Big Bend, and Boundary waters wilderness canoe areas in Minnesota to name a few. He even camped on the Llano River and Enchanted Rock areas of Texas with his troop. Little did he know he would spend the last few years of his life in this area. He was a great Scout Master and was loved and respected by all that knew him. A kind and gentle soul with a smile always (well usually) on his face. The family home on Lake Travis was always in the plans for extra weekends away from scouting. Fishing, sailing, skiing, and swimming were favorite pastimes for the Bentley family. In the early years, Edward and his lab co-workers would build and construct homemade fireworks for Fourth of July celebrations at the lake house using their knowledge of chemistry. Something that wouldn't be happening with today's fire codes! Wonderful Memories. In 1978, Edward and Ginny moved from Austin to Houston, and the two "empty nesters" purchased an old "Dog Run" style early Texas home and, after restoration, had it listed as an Historical Marker in neighboring Chappell Hill, Texas where they resided for over 30 years. He became the "Andy of Mayberry" to many of the residents there as the long-time president of the Chappell Hill Water Society. Relations with the Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society, Adkins Cemetery, restoring older buildings in Chappell Hill also received his time and attention. He made great friends and memories in Chappell Hill and Brenham for the many hours he put in supporting the communities. Edward and Ginny traveled extensively in Wales, England, Scotland and France and Edward even managed a trip to the Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave in France to see the famous figurative cave paintings. In the 1990's, Edward and Ginny became Poppy and Mimi as their next chapter in life unfolded. They designed an English cottage in Chappell Hill and filled their home with wonderful memories of friends in their community. Many memories with his grandchildren and great grandson Eli are forever ingrained within his soul. He adored his family, and they adored him. He spent his last few years in Llano, Texas at Celeste Care near family. Edward is survived by his son Russell and his wife Gayla, his daughter Gail Bentley Rose and her husband David, his grandchildren Dana Rose Pocasangre and her husband Oscar, and Trent Rose and his wife Madison. His granddaughter Dana blessed Edward with his favorite great grandchild, Eli Pocasangre (age 7). Both grandchildren are expecting new additions to their families soon, and Edward was excited to learn about these events before he passed. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins in California, Colorado, and Virginia. The family would like to thank the staff at Celeste Care and Solaris Hospice for all the efforts and compassion they extended to Dr. Bentley. In lieu of flowers, acceptance of donations to Llano Christian Academy would be greatly appreciated. Llano Christian Academy Scholarship Fund 507 East Green Street Llano, Texas 78643 A fellowship memorial luncheon for friends, family, staff and residents will be November 12, 2023 at 12pm CT at Celeste Care of Llano, 701 E. 145 | Obituary from Oakey's North Chaple, Roanoke, Virginia - https://memorial.oakeys.com/susan-cregger/4751827/ Susan Bentley Cregger September 23, 1936 - October 12, 2021 On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, (The SUNSET) Susan Bentley Cregger, a long-term resident of Roanoke, Virginia and Beloved by many Relatives and Friends in the Star City and Beyond, was granted admission into The Heavenly Gates, at the age of 85. Susan, born in Fredericksburg, Va., on September 23, 1936 (Her SUNRISE), was the daughter of a Methodist Minister (Floyd Thomas Bentley and her Mother, Edith Bayne Bentley). Susan was very warm and loving. She never knew a stranger. And, she had a huge smile throughout her entire life. Susan was a Valedictorian twice: once at her high school, William Byrd Senior High School and again in her early 40's at Virginia Western Community College while obtaining a Business Management degree. She was a real estate Broker/owner of Cregger and Company and a banker for her entire professional career while being an incredible cook and Mother. Susan lived her final 6+ months of her life in gorgeous Tidewater, Virginia, where she often wouuld gaze out at the Rappahannock River and lightly yell out, "I see a Boat!" Perhaps it was her really telling us that she could, on the horizon, "I see God' who eventually docked nearby to board Susan for her final voyage home into Eternity. She was surrounded by her family while crossing into the Kingdom of God on her custom Boat.
