Wild Babies Visit the Backyard

Goslings resting on the ground

Wild Babies – Photo of the Day, May 14, 2020

The goslings visiting our yard the past few days finally settled down enough for me to get a picture of them this morning. Four of them anyway. The other two insisted on running around the yard. Probably trying to keep mom on her toes. These wild babies are wild in every sense of the word, and Momma watches them like a hawk, even though she’s a goose.

There are more pictures of the wild babies that I may add to this post later. I haven’t processed them yet, but I wanted to get this one done. The others will have to wait.

The Canada Geese began flying in back around January. About a month ago we saw the first couple with their babies swimming up the pond out back. This week they have started climbing the bank to forage in the yard. They are beginning to display their independence as they wander around, and they haven’t been showing a whole lot of fear when I’m outside with my camera. Mom, however; is very wary.

About the Photo

The full size image is available to view on Flickr. If you have a Flickr account go ahead and follow me.

This shot was made with my Canon 60-D and a Tamron 18-400mm lens. I set the aperture to f/8 in aperture priority mode. Normally I would shot manually, but I chose the semi-auto setting so I didn’t have to think too much and could just focus on getting the shot. The shutter speed was 1/125 sec at ISO 400.
