Notes - Samuel Ernest Bayne told stories of "Grampa Bayne," although he was only seven years old when his grandfather died. He remembered distinctly four old ex-slaves who continued to live at the Bayne home in Baldwin County after the Civil War. Their names were Green, Morgan, Alfred, and Pompey. Pompey's wife was Emmaline, and she always wore a blue-checked dress with a white apron and a white head rag.
